Welcome to Foxhole. This checklist is for first-time hosts—especially those who’ve never listed a property on Foxhole or any other platform. Whether you’re opening your home to fellow Veterans for the first time or simply exploring the military housing space, this guide will walk you through what matters most.
Hosting on Foxhole isn’t about renting a bed. It’s about building trust, setting a professional tone, and delivering a clean, safe, and no-BS experience for the military community.
We assume your account has been verified via VerifyPass (for military members), or if you’re a civilian, your application was reviewed and approved by Foxhole HQ.
Step 1: Prepare Your Property for a Professional Stay
Run a full walkthrough. Fix anything broken. Clean everything top to bottom. Then check off these non-negotiables:
1. Key Lock Box
-
Gives guests 24/7 access. No need to coordinate key handoffs.
-
Recommended: Master Lock 5400D (Walmart, Amazon)
2. Wi-Fi Setup
-
Post the network name and password clearly. Include a QR code.
-
Example:
Wi-Fi: FoxholeHQ | Password: Freedom123
3. Smoke & CO Detectors
-
Install combo detectors in key areas. Test regularly.
-
Recommended: Kidde Smoke + CO Unit
4. First Aid Kit
-
Stock with band-aids, antiseptic, OTC meds, and emergency basics.
-
Place in kitchen or bathroom.
5. Fire Extinguisher
-
Mount it visibly near the kitchen.
-
Recommended: Kidde Multi-Purpose ABC Extinguisher
6. Quality Bedding & Towels
-
Use clean, neutral linens. At least 2 sets per bed.
7. Backup Essentials
-
Light bulbs, batteries, extra trash bags. Store them where guests can’t see but you can reach.
8. Trash & Recycling Bins
-
One in every room. Label clearly. Provide extra liners.
9. Iron & Ironing Board
-
Optional, but highly appreciated by guests attending ceremonies or formal events.
10. Hangers
-
5–10 per closet. Include a few heavy-duty ones for uniforms.
11. Full-Length Mirror
-
Especially appreciated for long-term stays or uniform prep.
Step 2: Security & Guest Safety
1. Exterior Cameras Only
-
Allowed for property security.
-
Interior cameras = Immediate Ban. No exceptions.
2. Secure All Entry Points
-
Check every door and window. Replace faulty locks.
3. Emergency Contact Info
-
Post a contact sheet: your number + local fire, police, and urgent care. Put it near the front door or in a house manual.
Step 3: Final Host Walkthrough
Before your first guest arrives, do this self-check:
-
Would I feel safe and comfortable staying here for a week?
-
Is everything clean, secure, and stocked?
-
Did I remove anything overly personal or fragile?
-
Does the space look like something I would want to book if I was PCSing tomorrow?
Extra Tips from HQ
-
Know the Local TDY & BAH Rates: Check the DoD BAH calculator. Your price should align with what junior officers or SNCOs can realistically afford.
-
Understand the Fee Structure: Foxhole charges a 10% platform fee on short-term stays and a one-time 15% finder’s fee for long-term bookings. That’s it. No monthly take.
-
Taxes Still Apply: Track your rental income. Foxhole will send you a 1099 if you earn more than $600/year. Speak with a tax pro or use a tool like QuickBooks.
-
Build a System: Use a smart lock, automated check-in messages, and cleaning checklist. The best hosts treat this like a business.
-
Ask for Feedback: After your first stay, follow up with your guest and request a review. Reviews build trust and improve visibility.
Final Thought
This is your mission now. Hosting on Foxhole is about supporting the community, not just collecting a payout. Follow the standard, serve your guests well, and we’ll make sure the right people keep booking your space — PCS after PCS
